The clock helped bring structure to lives, but as it emerged it ruined older traditions of time management and time telling. We started listening to the tick of the clock and not our inner selves. We use metaphores to explain ourselves as new technologies emerge. The clock gave the metaphore "operating like clock work", and the computer has us "operating like computers." Technologies like the clock and computer have changed the way we think and go about our lives. We use new thought processes provided by these tools which limit ourselves to working only with the new and not the old.
